Westport slipped to a five-point defeat in Carrowholly last weekend to the current champions Monivea who were in no mood to loose to Mayo opposition for the second week in a row. They were far from the Monivea of old in the early exchanges but a good second half display showed they still had the class of old within themselves.

•Corinthians unbeaten 2nd XV take on the 2006 Junior League champions Westport in Carrowholly this Sunday. After an uninspiring victory away to Corrib last weekend, this is a mouth-watering challenge. In last year's corresponding fixture in Cloonacauneen, the game was won in the final play with a superb 50 metre finish by Ciaran Dolan.

With the Connacht Junior League taking a break this weekend after the first couple of rounds of games got the paddocks across the province muddied up for the rest of the season, it will give the Mayo sides involved a chance to regroup and get their game plans down for the remainder of the year. With five rounds of the league gone so far Westport are the best placed Mayo side and sit in sixth position in the league tables on 12 points with two wins from five. They sit a point ahead of Castlebar thanks to the four bonus points they have picked up. Castlebar, despite having won the same number of games and picking up a draw, trail their near neighbours because they have only managed to pick up a solitary bonus point in their five outings.

It’s must win time for all three of the Mayo clubs in the Connacht Junior League this weekend. After the last few rounds have seen them all stumble out of contention for the title and left them scrapping around to stay in the race for All Ireland Junior Cup place for next season. And unless there is a draw one of the three Mayo sides’ losing run will continue into the next round of fixtures. This weekends round of games features a crunch all Mayo derby in north Mayo where Ballina will host Westport.

Corinthians produced a solid team effort against struggling Buccaneers to remain in the top quarter of the Connacht Junior League division 1A table with a 37 - 10 victory at Corinthian Park on Sunday.

• Corinthians, currently in fifth place in division three, have a real chance to continue their momentum when they host Sunday’s Well at Cloonacauneen on Saturday (2.30pm). With 14 points, they, like Galwegians, have posted three wins from four outings, while their opponents are currently parked in 15th place with just five points. This is a real chance to continue their move up the table, and one they can be expected to take.

•One of the province’s youngest rugby clubs, Oughterard RFC, is promoting a pitch development fundraiser. The winner of the €100 ticket, which is limited to 500, will receive two tickets to the Lions Tour, including flights to South Africa, accommodation for 18 nights, tickets to the three test matches and the emerging Sprinkboks, plus €1 ,000 spending money. Connacht rivals Galwegians and Buccaneers clash on Saturday in the AIB League division one at Dubarry Park, Athlone, on Saturday afternoon (2.30pm).

•Corinthians claimed the scalp of city rivals Galwegians by 15 - 0 in the battle for a play-off place in AIL u-20 division one league. In appalling conditions, both sides served up an enthralling contest which saw Corinthians move up into joint third place in a league currently led by fellow Connacht outfit Buccaneers. Unsurprisingly, it became a battle up front, and Corinthians, with the wind, dominated territory for the first half. Prop Fiachra Tierney was unlucky when stopped just short due to the excellent Wegians pack, led by Greg Leader. Scoreless at the break, Galwegians looked the more likely to win, but Corinthians played outstanding rugby to dominate the second half and score three tries. Johnny Kearney touched down for the first try. When Shane Conneely broke on the blind, he fed Kevin Russell who dived over in the corner. Galwegians fought back, but with time running out scrumhalf Peter Walsh sold an outrageous dummy from broken play to score the third. Corinthians now meet Cork Constitution in Temple Hill on Saturday.

•Corinthians are riding a high at present. With the senior side currently sitting in pole position in division three of the AIB League, the club’s u-20s have now reached the AIL division one play-offs. Last weekend they overcame Bruff by 25 - 7, posting both the win and a bonus point to qualify ahead of Cork Con, Shannon, and Young Munster. Led by captain James Robinson, Corinthians opened the scoring after 10 minutes with a well worked try off a scrum when No.8 Liam Carpenter broke left and fed winger Kevin Russell who raced from the half way line before finding the supporting Brendan Carpenter who finished off. The Corinthian pack dominated the bigger Bruff counterparts, and after sustained pressure in which man of the match David Ott was prominent, James Robinson crashed over for a well deserved second try. Bruff countered with a try, but Corinthians grabbed try No 3 when winger Aengus O'Connell set up Finn Gormley for a 15-7 half-time lead. It was over within minutes of the restart when Colin Raftery’s line-out steal produced the fourth try which winger Kevin Russella scored.
